Frequently asked questions

Planning a family trip to Hamburg? Our FAQ covers the top questions parents ask, from finding baby food and stroller-friendly neighborhoods to whether taxis have car seats and if tap water is safe for baby formula. Get clear, honest answers to make your kid-friendly Hamburg adventure easier. Still need help? Reach out and we’ll be glad to assist.

Do local taxis or ride-share services offer cars equipped with child car seats?

Don’t count on it. While a few taxi companies like Hansa Taxi let you pre-book a car seat if you call ahead, most cabs and ride-shares won’t show up magically equipped for your kid. If you want to play it safe, bring your own travel car seat or book a car service that specializes in families.

Eimsbüttel and Winterhude are your best friends. They’ve got wide sidewalks, green parks, and cafés that don’t give you the side-eye for showing up with a double stroller. Ottensen and parts of Altona are charming too, but watch for occasional cobblestones that’ll rattle your stroller and your nerves.

  • Miniatur Wunderland – It’s like crack for kids and adults who love tiny things.

  • Hagenbeck Zoo – Classic, sprawling, and fun year-round.

  • Planten un Blomen – Free water light shows in summer and epic playgrounds.

  • Hamburg Dungeon – Older kids who like a little spook will love it.

  • Rickmer Rickmers – A real pirate-like ship they can explore right in the harbor.

Look for DM, Budni, or Rossmann drugstores. They’re everywhere, and they stock organic brands like Hipp, Holle, and Alete. Rewe and Edeka supermarkets also carry the same brands. Hipp tends to be the crowd favorite with parents. We recommend going to drug stores first as they have more selection and most of them also provide baby changing stations. So if you’re ever up shit’s creek without a diaper, most Budni’s and DM’s usually have one.

Yep. Right by Jungfernstieg, you’ll find playgrounds around Planten un Blomen, and HafenCity has multiple modern playgrounds tucked between the canals and new buildings. Speicherstadt also has a small but cool play area near the Wasserschloss. Or you can just scroll up a big and look at our interactive map that has all the best playgrounds listed for you.

Definitely. Most places let kids under 4 or 5 in for free. Many museums and attractions have family tickets or reduced child rates for ages 6-14. Always check their websites because some offer family days with extra discounts.

Round up in taxis (for example, €13.50 becomes €15) and leave around 5-10% at restaurants. For babysitters or nannies, it’s not expected, but a small thank-you tip if they go above and beyond never hurts.

Hamburg tap water is some of the best in Germany. Clean, tasty, and tested like crazy. Totally fine for mixing formula unless your pediatrician says otherwise.

If you look up Rabatzz! Indoorspielplatz in Stellingen you will find the trifecta, or bermuda triangle of entertainment. Within one block there is an Indoor Play area, then in the building next door is UrbanApes, an indoor climbing facility. THEN Across the street you have Jump House. They are listed as a Trampolinpark, but man do they have way more than that. On top of everything there is a REWE as well. So you can pre-snack before you go. Or see if you can bring in outside food to save some coin.

The most popular platform at the moment is Sitly. They offer local sitters at reasonable prices. Platforms like Betreut.de or local Facebook groups for parents are also solid options. Many hotels also partner with agencies for vetted sitters. Just plan ahead, as last-minute sitters can be tricky in a city like Hamburg.

Speicherstadt is stunning but full of bumpy cobblestones that’ll shake your baby’s snacks right out of the cup holder. St. Pauli has some steep bits near the Reeperbahn. Otherwise, Hamburg’s fairly flat and easy to navigate with a stroller, especially in family-friendly districts listed above 👆.
