Obsthof Viets: Hands Full of Fruit, Pockets Full of Snacks

It’s called Obsthof Viets, and it’s a working farm. It’s low-key. And somehow your kid still leaves dirty, full, and genuinely happy. Located in Neu Wulmstorf, southwest of Hamburg, this family-run fruit farm lets you pick your own produce during the season. Strawberries, cherries, apples, plums, and more, all depending on when you go. Strawberry season typically runs from early June to early July, with apples coming in later through autumn. Obsthof Viets has small animals to pet, a well-stocked farm shop, and a charming café that keeps things simple: cake, coffee, simple.

Kids love the thrill of finding the “best” berry or the “biggest” apple. And there’s something about picking your own that magically makes them want to eat more fruit. The farm is open during the full harvest season and posts regular updates about what’s ripe and ready on their Facebook and Instagram pages.

The fields are well-organized and relatively stroller-friendly, so you’re not dragging your youngest through mud pits or up steep hills. The staff will show you where to go, hand you a basket, and let you roam. Just fresh air and a very clear goal: fill your bucket.

There’s also a play area with hay bales and wooden structures for climbing, plus picnic benches for tired parents. The on-site café serves hearty slices of German-style sheet cake and proper coffee. Prices are fair, the portions are generous, and seating is mostly outdoors.

If you’re lucky, you might catch one of their seasonal farm festivals or market days, where they sell homemade jams, farm-fresh eggs, and the kind of produce you wish your supermarket stocked.

Go in the morning if you want to avoid crowds, especially on weekends during strawberry season. Bring a sunhat, wipes, and your own containers if you’re planning to buy extra. They encourage bringing your own reusable baskets or containers, especially for larger hauls. Leave the scooter at home, but strollers are fine. And yes, it’s smart to pack a change of clothes just in case.
