Obsthof Viets is a working fruit farm in Neu Wulmstorf, southwest of Hamburg, and it’s about as low-key as a family day out gets. No entrance fee, no wristbands, no structured activities. You show up, grab a basket, head into the fields, and pick what’s ripe. Strawberries typically run from early June to early July. Cherries, apples, and plums come later through autumn. The farm posts regular updates on Facebook and Instagram about what’s ready, so it’s worth a quick check before you drive out.
There’s also a small animal area, a well-stocked farm shop, and a café serving German-style sheet cake and proper coffee. Prices are fair, portions are generous, and most of the seating is outdoors. It’s the kind of place where you can sit in the sun with a coffee while the kids disappear into the rows of fruit and come back with stained fingers and extremely strong opinions about which strawberry was the best one they found.
What to Know Before You Go
The fields are reasonably stroller-friendly. Not perfectly flat, but manageable. Staff will point you in the right direction, hand you a basket, and leave you to it. Kids love the picking because it feels like treasure hunting. There’s also a play area with hay bales and wooden climbing structures, plus picnic benches if you want to spread out and stay a while. On some weekends they run seasonal market days selling homemade jams, farm-fresh eggs, and produce you wish your supermarket stocked.
Go in the morning on weekends, especially during strawberry season. It gets busy. Bring a sunhat, wipes, and your own reusable containers if you’re planning a bigger haul. They encourage it. Leave the scooter at home but strollers are fine. Pack a spare set of clothes. You know why.
