Heide Himmel

A treetop walkway, arctic foxes, and waffles. This one’s worth the drive.

Heide Himmel sits next to Wildpark Lüneburger Heide, about an hour south of Hamburg, and the main draw is the Baumwipfelpfad: a wide wooden walkway that winds through the forest at canopy height. It’s long enough to feel like a proper outing, built with gentle inclines so strollers and wheelchairs can do the whole thing without drama. Lookout platforms are spaced throughout with views across the heathland, benches to sit on, and info panels to ignore or read depending on the age and patience of whoever you’re with.

It’s not free. Adults are €11, kids 3-14 are €8, but you can bundle it with Wildpark entry for better value, and the family ticket option is worth checking before you book.

The Wildlife Park Next Door

Wildpark Lüneburger Heide is right there and genuinely worth combining with the treetop walk. Arctic foxes, lynx, wild boars, deer, and birds of prey, all in spacious natural enclosures. The paths are wide and quiet, with small playground areas along the route and shaded spots when someone needs a sit-down and a snack. No loud shows, no gimmicks.

On-site there’s a restaurant, snack kiosks, and picnic zones if you’d rather bring your own food. Waffles are available. That matters. Facilities are solid: changing tables, accessible paths, clean toilets. The kind of setup that means you’re thinking about the walk, not logistics.

Early mornings or late afternoons are quieter if you want to avoid school groups. Bring sunscreen for the canopy section and binoculars if you have them. Both are genuinely useful.
