The BUND Naturerlebnisgarten sits at the southern edge of the Wilhelmsburger Inselpark, run by BUND Hamburg with a rotating cast of volunteers. It’s 5,000 sqm of apple trees, meadows, raised beds, small biotopes, a willow tunnel, a hedge labyrinth, and enough insects to keep a curious child occupied for a solid afternoon. No entry fee, no gift shop, no scheduled fun.
The whole point of the place is unstructured contact with nature. Kids can dig in the raised beds, follow the barefoot path, get lost in the hedge labyrinth, peer into the ground-level viewing windows to see what’s happening in the soil, and generally get grubby without anyone being annoyed about it. BUND staff and volunteers are on hand during open hours, genuinely knowledgeable, and patient with children who have a lot of questions about worms.
What’s On and When
The garden is open to the public on Wednesdays 10:00–18:00 and Fridays 14:00–18:00. These are the confirmed hours from the official BUND website. Google Maps lists Tuesday hours which don’t match. So ignore those. Worth noting that the garden is volunteer-run, and at least one visitor has shown up to find it unexpectedly closed. If you’re making a special trip, drop them an email first or check the events calendar on the BUND website.
On top of the open garden days, BUND runs a regular programme of workshops and events: wild herb walks, pond dipping sessions, gardening work days, and seasonal nature activities. Some require a small donation (usually around €5), most are free. The annual Frühlingserwachen festival in May in the wider Inselpark is worth planning around. Birthday parties for children can also be arranged through BUND Hamburg’s education programme.
BUND also runs canoe sessions from the garden area through their canoe4nature programme, collecting litter from the Wilhelmsburg waterways while exploring the local habitat. Worth checking if it’s running when you visit.
Getting There
The garden is best reached by S-Bahn to Wilhelmsburg, then on foot or by bike through the Inselpark. The address reference is Am Inselpark, 21109 Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg (near Hauland 83). Street parking is limited and the Inselpark is much nicer to arrive in by bike. No on-site parking. The Inselpark Café is a few minutes’ walk away if you need coffee and didn’t bring your own.
