Port des Lumières Hamburg

Floor-to-ceiling projections, a kids’ studio, and an Infinity Mirror Room. Know what you’re walking into before you buy the tickets.

Port des Lumières opened in Hamburg in April 2025 and is the largest permanent immersive art centre in northern Germany. It sits inside the Westfield Überseequartier in HafenCity, takes up 1,700 square metres of exhibition space, and runs rotating digital exhibitions where large-scale projections cover every wall, floor, and ceiling while music fills the space. It’s visually impressive. It’s also loud, polarising, and very much a specific kind of experience that works brilliantly for some families and doesn’t land at all for others. The TripAdvisor rating is 2.5 stars from 64 reviews, which is worth knowing before you spend €46 on a family ticket.

The current exhibition running until 1 June 2026 is From Vermeer to Van Gogh, covering Dutch Masters including Vermeer, Rembrandt, and Van Gogh, alongside a shorter format called Mondrian: The Architect of Colours. Running alongside it is Dinosaurs: The Immersive Experience, based on the Apple TV series A Planet Before Our Time. The exhibitions rotate roughly every 12 to 24 months so what’s on when you visit will depend on the date.

What’s Actually There

The main halls are darkened spaces where the projections move continuously across every surface. You walk in, find a spot, and the show loops around you. There’s no fixed route and no requirement to stay in one place. Some kids are completely absorbed for the full hour. Others check out after ten minutes and start using their shoes as puppets. The official recommendation is ages 5 and up, and that tracks in practice.

The Kids’ Atelier is a separate interactive studio where children can experiment with digital art installations. It only opens from 14:00 to 15:30 daily, so if that’s your main reason for coming, plan around it. The Selfie Room closes 30 minutes before the exhibition ends, and the Infinity Mirror Room is a permanent installation. There’s also a free app that provides additional context on the artworks if you want more than just atmosphere.

One thing multiple reviewers flag, including a family who visited in April 2026 and left after 20 minutes: the volume is very loud. If you have a child who’s sensitive to noise, factor that in seriously.

Before You Go

You must book a time slot in advance. Entry is only permitted at your booked time and late arrivals may not be admitted. Arrive 15 minutes before your slot. Bags larger than A4 have to go in the lockers provided. Large luggage is not allowed inside at all. A typical visit is about one hour.

Getting there is easy. U4 to Überseequartier, then a short walk. The venue is step-free throughout. Strollers can be parked at the entrance but aren’t permitted inside the exhibition halls.
