Pier Drei’s Racker Room

A 200 square metre parent-free play zone inside a design hotel in HafenCity. From €5 an hour. Ages 4 to 9.

Most hotels claim to be family-friendly. What they mean is they have a cot in the corner and a breakfast buffet with one box of Frosties. Pier Drei Hotel in HafenCity actually thought about it. The result is the Racker Room, a dedicated 200 square metre kids’ area on the ground floor of a boutique hotel, staffed, structured, and specifically designed so that adults cannot come in. Drop your kids off. Go sit at the bar. That’s the whole concept and it works.

The Racker Room is for ages 4 to 9. Under 4, email [email protected] and ask what’s possible. Over 9 there’s a separate Teens Area next door with foosball, PlayStation, and a chillout zone. The two spaces sit adjacent to the KITCHENS restaurant and the Three Fingers Bar, so the geography of the whole thing is deliberate: kids occupied, parents fed and watered, everyone within a reasonable radius.

What’s Inside

The official features are a LEGO wall, a climbing wall, a creative arts and crafts table, a Ravensburger games selection, a cushion corner, a fairy tale cave (Märchenhöhle) stuffed with pillows, a children’s book library, a Toniebox audio station, and regular film evenings for ages 6 and up. The room is staffed by the hotel’s Racker Room team who run activities and keep an eye on things. It’s not a drop-off crèche in the clinical sense. It’s a play room with structure, run by people who have clearly spent time with children before.

The library section is accessible 24/7 for hotel guests, which is useful at the end of a long day when someone needs to wind down quietly with a book at 8pm and you need ten minutes.

The Practical Bit

Tickets are booked through the hotel’s ticketing system at pretix.eu/rackerroom. Pricing is from €5 for one hour, €10 for two hours, €15 for three hours. Film evenings are €15. Booking ahead is strongly recommended during school holidays when demand is high. The space fills up.

You don’t need to be a hotel guest to use the Racker Room, but check with the hotel before assuming you can just walk in. Spontaneous visits are described as possible on the official site, but advance booking is preferred. If you’re visiting for the day rather than staying, call ahead.

The hotel also rents strollers at €15 per day subject to availability, which is worth knowing if you’re in Hamburg without your own and need something for the day.

Regular opening hours are 9:00-17:00 daily. Check the online calendar for film evenings and special programme days.
