Hamburg Planetarium

A 20-metre dome, 360-degree projections, laser concerts, and a rooftop with views over the Stadtpark. Closed Mondays.

The Hamburg Planetarium sits inside a former water tower in the Stadtpark in Winterhude, which is already a more interesting building than most attractions manage. Inside, a 20-metre dome projects 360-degree images of the universe using an 8K Zeiss star projector, a full surround sound system, and one of the largest laser and light installations in the world. It was the first planetarium in the world when it opened in 1930, which makes it either very old or very experienced depending on how you look at it.

Shows run across four categories: Sternenreisen (space journeys), Planet Erde (earth science), Musik & Kultur (laser concerts and music shows), and Kinderveranstaltungen (children’s shows). Each show has an age recommendation listed on the website, which is genuinely useful. Shows for kids from age 3 exist. So do laser Floyd concerts for teenagers and adults who have been waiting for an excuse to stare at a dome for an hour. The whole family can usually find something in the same visit if you plan the programme in advance.

What’s Actually Good About It

The Sternensaal reclines. This is not a minor detail. You lean back, the lights go down, and 30 minutes of space goes over your head while nobody is asking you for anything. It is a legitimately different experience from most family days out, and it works for children from quite young ages because the visual experience is overwhelming enough to hold attention without requiring much context.

The observation platform is free with any show ticket. It’s on the top of the water tower with views over the Stadtpark and the city as far as the Elbphilharmonie on a clear day. Worth the five minutes after the show.

Café Schmidtchen is on site for coffee and snacks. No food or drinks are permitted inside the Sternensaal itself.

Before You Go

Tickets vary by show type. Standard shows cost €12.30 for adults and €7.70 for children and young people up to 17. 3D shows add €1.60 per ticket. Music and culture shows start from €12.30 and vary by artist. Hamburg CARD holders get €2 off adult tickets and €1.50 off children’s tickets for Sternenreisen and Planet Erde shows.

No entry after a show has started. No exceptions. The official guidance is to arrive at least 20 minutes before the show. Book online in advance, especially for weekend shows and school holidays.

Audio guides are available at the box office for shows that support them. Check the show listing for available languages before booking if German isn’t your first language.

Public transport is the better option. U3 to Borgweg or Bus 179 to Stadtpark (Planetarium), then about 5 minutes on foot. By car, parking is available on Linnering and Otto-Wels-Straße, also about 5 minutes’ walk. Visitors with a blue disabled badge can use the dedicated spaces directly behind the planetarium via the barrier on Linnering.

Why Parents Love It:
  • Reclining seats in a dark dome. 30 minutes of contained, screen-free, zero-effort entertainment.

Why Kids Love It:
  • 360-degree projections that fill the entire ceiling and floor

  • Laser shows for older kids and teenagers
  • The building is a water tower, which is already impressive before you even get inside
