Most cafĂ©s tolerate children the way they tolerate slow wifi. They’ve got one sticky high chair in the corner and a look from the staff that says you’re technically allowed to be here but you should probably wrap this up. Why Not CafĂ© on DaimlerstraĂźe in Ottensen is the opposite of that. It’s a community cafĂ© run by the integration organisation why-not-integration.org, built around the idea that different kinds of people belong in the same space, and that includes families with small children alongside everyone else.
Walk in and the mix of people tells the story quickly. A range of languages, ages, and backgrounds, regulars and newcomers, parents and solo visitors. Nobody’s being managed or monitored. The atmosphere is relaxed in a way that takes a little getting used to if you’re accustomed to cafĂ©s where you feel like you’re being tolerated rather than welcomed.
The Kindercafé
The children’s play room is the thing that makes this a regular rather than a one-off. It’s a dedicated space with climbing blocks, soft play elements, and enough room for multiple small children without anyone ending up in someone else’s way. Parents can sit around the edges with a coffee and still keep an eye on what’s happening. It’s not a corner bolted onto the cafĂ© as an afterthought. It’s part of how the place was designed.
The result is that you can have a conversation with another adult at a reasonable volume, finish something warm while it’s still warm, and not spend the whole visit in low-level crisis management mode. This is not a universal cafĂ© experience. It should be.
The Food and Coffee
The menu runs to coffee, homemade cake, soups, toasts, sandwiches, and breakfast options including vegetarian and vegan choices. Organic ingredients and homemade products throughout. Prices are fair for the neighbourhood. No separate children’s menu, but the team is accommodating and happy to adjust portions or simplify things for small eaters. Card and cash accepted.
Hours are daily 10:00-18:00, shortening to 17:00 in winter. Worth checking before a late visit in December or January.
There’s no outdoor seating. Limited street parking nearby. The nearest bus stop is DaimlerstraĂźe, about 350 metres away. S-Bahn Ottensen or Bahrenfeld are both within walking distance.
