Karlsons has been doing Scandinavian café food in Hamburg since 2010, which means it was family-friendly before that was a thing cafés marketed. Two locations, both in the kind of neighbourhoods where you park the bike, not the car. The menu covers elk salami, blueberry jam, apple pancakes, hot dogs, Köttbullar and a rotating weekly lunch. The cake cabinet is always full and always homemade.
The Grindel location on Rutschbahn has a play corner for younger children and a courtyard that gets good sun in warmer months. There are wooden toys and it has a relaxed atmosphere where children aren’t treated as a noise problem. The Neustadt location on Alter Steinweg is the slightly more central option if you’re passing through.
Both locations do breakfast, a weekly-changing lunch menu and homemade cakes. Reservations are possible via the website, which is worth doing for weekend brunch. Vegan options are available across the menu.
