Projekt Vielfalt

A permaculture farm, a basket, and kids who suddenly care about vegetables. Free to enter.

If you’ve ever tried to get your kid to understand where food comes from without resorting to a slideshow or a sad seed in a jar that dies within a week, there’s a better option. Projekt Vielfalt is tucked away in the countryside of Jersbek, just northeast of Hamburg, and it’s an actual working permaculture space where families can pick their own fruits and vegetables, explore wildflower trails, and join nature-based workshops that don’t feel like school.

The setup is simple. You grab a basket, head into the rows of seasonal produce, and pick what you want. Pay by weight on the way out. No gate fee, no plastic wristbands, no queuing for a 30-second ride. Kids love it because it’s real. You’re pulling actual carrots, smelling actual herbs, and watching actual bees do their thing. Depending on the season you might find raspberries, lettuce, kale, sunflowers, or wild strawberries. Some days there are compost workshops or herb walks. Others, it’s just you and the dirt. That’s kind of perfect too.

Relaxed, Inclusive, and Never Preachy About It

Projekt Vielfalt is big on biodiversity and sustainable farming, but they’re not in your face about it. The signage is clear without being overwhelming, and the team on-site is friendly and good with curious kids. There’s a shaded area to sit while they poke around the flower beds, and the whole space is stroller-friendly and never overcrowded. You don’t need to know anything about gardening to enjoy it. Just bring curiosity and maybe a tote bag.

Throughout the year there are themed events: seed swaps, guided foraging walks, nature craft days. They’re usually low-cost or donation-based and posted online a week or two before they happen. Worth checking before you go.

No entry fee, no mascots, no merchandise. Just nature, time, and kids who come home with dirt under their nails and an opinion about what thyme smells like.
