Zum Dorfkrug Landhof

A farm, a playground, and schnitzel. That’s the whole pitch.

Sometimes the only way to survive the weekend is to pack up the kids and aim for somewhere that doesn’t involve plastic balls or overpriced soft play. Zum Dorfkrug Landhof in Neu Wulmstorf is that kind of place. It’s a mix of open-air restaurant, farmyard, and sprawling play area where kids can let loose and parents might actually breathe for a minute. It’s not a petting zoo and it’s not one of those Instagram-ready flower fields. It’s a working farm with a twist. The twist being you can eat schnitzel while your toddler climbs a wooden tractor and your older kid disappears into the play fort, and you genuinely don’t mind.

Animals, Adventure, and a Retro Bus Full of Crafts

The adventure playground isn’t your typical swing-and-slide setup. There are climbing structures shaped like animals, trampolines, and a dedicated mud section. A pedal-powered Kettcar circuit lets kids race each other around for no particular reason, plus there’s a kart track for the slightly older crowd who want a bit more speed and chaos. The whole space is spread out and unfenced in the best way, and somehow still totally manageable. Then there’s the Oldtimer Bastelbus, a retro bus turned weekend craft workshop that actually delivers. Open Saturdays and Sundays, kids make real things from real materials. Projects change with the seasons, so you might walk away with a handmade herb planter or a bee hotel. It’s €10 a head, and worth it for the focused calm that mysteriously overtakes your child for a solid hour. The animals pull it all together. This isn’t a few sad goats and a lonely rabbit. It’s a living farm with milking cows, pigs, alpacas, chickens, sheep, and bees, all just out there doing their thing. Kids can meet them up close, walk the pasture path, or join a guided tour with Bauer Hektor or Bäuerin Käthe through feedings, straw barns, and occasionally, an actual pig race. There’s even a chance to meet baby calves if your timing’s right.

Food, a Farm Shop, and Something Always Going On

When attention spans start running low, the Hofcafé is open all afternoon with homemade burgers, seasonal pinsa, ice cream, cakes, and fries. The outdoor seating includes beach chairs with a view of the alpaca field, which is honestly the kind of afternoon we’re all chasing. While the kids refuel, the farm shop is worth a look. Their own milk, cheese, eggs, meat, sauces, desserts, and regional wines, plus gift baskets if you want to feel like someone who has their life together. There’s also always something happening beyond the regular day. Storytelling events, seasonal markets, live music, lantern parades, country dances. You can book birthday parties with extras like carrot harvesting, fries, and full use of the kart track and Bastelbus. And if you want something more adult, they run tastings and workshops too. It’s a local hub that just happens to also have alpacas.

If you think Zum Dorfkrug Landhof is just a farm café, you’re missing about 90% of the picture. You’ll stay longer than you planned and probably come back before you expected.
