You want green space, animals, fresh air, and a café that doesn’t charge 5 bucks for juice. But you don’t want to spend 2 hours getting there. Enter Tierhaus Steilshoop, a small animal farm dropped right into the middle of Hamburg’s residential sprawl.

We’re not talking petting zoo in a mall. This is an actual functioning urban farm with goats, sheep, chickens, bees, a community garden, and just enough mud to remind your kid what the outdoors smells like.

A Bit of Bullerbü Between the Concrete

The Tierhaus, also known as Hof Bullerbü, sits at the edge of Fritz-Flinte-Ring like it doesn’t even care that it’s surrounded by high-rises. You walk in and suddenly, you’re not in Hamburg anymore. There are goats napping in the shade, hens clucking around a coop, raised garden beds bursting with vegetables, and families actually talking to each other without phones in hand. And yes, kids are allowed to touch stuff.

There’s a structured program of nature activities and workshops. Have a look online for up to date schedules of workshops. There are Bee tours, planting days, baking afternoons but honestly, just hanging out and letting your child have a casual goat encounter is enough.

When to Go and What to Bring

This isn’t a place that works like a commercial zoo. It’s community-run, so hours and activities are posted weekly online or at the entrance. It’s best to go in the morning or early afternoon, especially on weekends. Entry is free. Donations are welcomed by them, and encouraged by us. Wear weather-appropriate shoes. The paths aren’t paved, and it’s a working farm. If it rained yesterday, chances are it’s mud today. There’s limited indoor space, so plan accordingly. And yes, there’s now a small café, so coffee is covered. We highly recommend having a look around the area as well. There’s also Spielplatz Borchertring within walking distance. So if there is still more energy to burn off, grab a coffee and let your kids go HAM on the playground until they call it a day.

Tierhaus Steilshoop is one of those rare city finds that actually delivers. It’s rough around the edges, but that’s the charm. No branding. No mascots. Just real animals, real grass, and kids who leave with dirt on their hands and stories to tell.
