Zum Dorfkrug Landhof: Part Farm, Part Playground

Sometimes the only way to survive the weekend is to pack up the kids and aim for something that doesn’t involve plastic balls or overpriced soft play. Zum Dorfkrug Landhof in Neu Wulmstorf is that kind of place. It’s a mix of open-air restaurant, farmyard, and sprawling play area where kids can let loose and parents might just breathe for a minute.

This isn’t a petting zoo or one of those Instagram-ready flower fields. It’s a working farm with a twist. The twist being you can eat schnitzel while watching your toddler climb a wooden tractor and your older kid disappears into the play fort, and you couldn’t care less.

At first glance, Landhof Zum Dorfkrug might look like just another countryside café with a few animals. But once you start walking around, you realize this place is basically a small-scale festival that forgot to charge an entrance fee.

Let’s start with the adventure playground. It’s not your typical swing-and-slide setup. We’re talking climbing structures designed to look like animals, trampolines, and a whole section dedicated to glorious, glorious mud. There’s a pedal-powered Kettcar circuit where kids race each other around without rules or reason, plus a kart track for the slightly older crowd who want just a little more speed and chaos. The whole space is spread out, unfenced in the best way, and somehow still totally manageable for parents.

Then there’s the Oldtimer Bastelbus, a retro bus turned into a weekend craft workshop that actually delivers. Open Saturdays and Sundays, it hosts small group sessions where kids (and sometimes adults) make real things with real materials. Not glitter glue and paper plates. Actual crafts. Projects change with the seasons, so you might walk away with a handmade herb planter or a bee hotel. It’s €10 a head, and totally worth it for the calm focus that mysteriously overtakes your child for a solid hour.

But the animals are what pull it all together. This isn’t a petting zoo with few sad goats and a lonely bunny. It’s a living farm with, milking cows, pigs, alpacas, chickens, sheep, bees, and more. All just out there doing their thing. Kids can meet them up close, walk the pasture path to watch them grazing, or join a guided tour with Bauer Hektor or Bäuerin Käthe. Real farmers walking you through feedings, straw barns, and occasionally, an actual pig race. There’s even a chance to meet baby calves if your timing’s right.

If your kid’s attention span is running out, that’s your cue to grab a table at the Hofcafé. It’s open all afternoon, serving everything from homemade burgers and seasonal pinsa to ice cream, cakes, and fries. The outdoor seating includes beach chairs with a view of the alpaca field, which is honestly the kind of parenting we’re all looking for. And while the kids refuel, you can take a spin through the farm shop, which is fully stocked with things you’ll actually want to buy. We’re talking about their own milk, cheese, eggs, meat, sauces (yes, the famous Sylter Salatfrische is there), desserts, and regional wines. They even make gift baskets if you want to feel like someone who has their life together.

The best part? There’s always something happening. Storytelling events, seasonal markets, live music, lantern parades, country dances. It’s basically a year-round party. You can book birthday parties too, with extras like carrot harvesting, fries, and full use of the kart track and Bastelbus. And if you’re looking for something more adult, they’ve got tastings, workshops, and proper get-togethers that make this feel more like a local hub than a themed attraction.

Bottom line: if you think Landhof Zum Dorfkrug is just a farm café, you’re missing about 90% of the picture. This place has layers. It’s one part adventure zone, one part maker-space, one part modern farm, and somehow still a relaxing afternoon out. You’ll stay longer than you planned and probably come back before you expected.
